SugarCRM Release 5.2 became available in late 2008. When this article was written (December 2008) we didn't think that it would be ready for production use until late 2009. We weren't too far off the mark. The recently released (August, 2009) patch (h) has put most of the major bugs to bed and in our opinion made it ready for production use.
The most talked about changes are in the links to social networking sites (for the Community Edition there is only one link - to LinkedIn - but others can be built). You can see this feature in the Contacts module in this demonstration.
The demonstration site is an "out of the box" installation with no customisations and no tailoring performed. As you browse the application, it is worth remembering that most fields can be removed or changed and a huge variety of new fields can be added, and the application can be customised to show your users as many or as few modules as they need.
